This 44-minute documentary chronicles the amazing interplanetary journeys of the two Voyager probes that explored the outer planets of our solar system. The film, sans narration, is a collection of images–a mixture of computer animation and actual photographs–set to classical music. The film was made in 1990 right after Voyager 2’s final encounters with Neptune, and the computer animation is dated. Superimposed titles are used to relay information and catalog the images of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and their moons. As a scientific study, the film doesn’t come close to the various Nova and Discovery Channel documentaries on the subject. However, as a stellar travelogu, the movie works quite well as copious images float in and out of frame. The accompanying classical music–inspired by Kubrick’s selections for 2001–should be cranked up. The final product can easily play in the background of a party as a new type of “video art.” –Doug Thomas

Basically it’s about:
G-Saviour: The Movie is an oddity: an American live-action film made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gundam, one of the most popular and successful franchises in anime history. Although Yoshiyuki Tomino’s mecha show actually debuted on Japanese television in 1979, it was the three feature-length compilations of the series released in 1981-82 that made Gundam a hit. The programs that followed are sprawling sci-fi epics that focus on teenagers whose psychic abilities enable them to pilot the splendidly designed robot-suits. The plot of G-Saviour, in which an evil general tries to destroy a mysterious enzyme that could end world hunger, is no hokier than many of the animated Gundam adventures. But the characters are all adults, and the turgid romance, in which a woman precipitates a war over her pilot-boyfriend’s affections, lands with a thud. The film lacks the scope and brilliant design work of the anime series: despite the numerous CG effects by Digital Muse, G-Saviour feels like an undistinguished movie-of-the-week. Rated 13 Up: Violence, minor profanity. –Charles Solomon
While I’ve watched G-Saviour – The Movie a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. If you haven’t seen it, or just haven’t watched it in a while – why not watch it now?
